Plot Development
The White Rabbit
Alice has a dream sequence. She is walking in a field, on a beautiful, sunny day. As she gazes into the sky, she realizes she's actually gazing into the surface of a lake. She's walking on the water. Ripples cross her field of vision. She tracks them to their source.
A white rabbit stands on the water, looking at her with a puzzled expression. It hops away, and she follows. The water splashes her. The rabbit comes to a whirlpool and stops, looking over its shoulder. It jumps in. She follows.
As she swirls in the water, she finds it colder than she expected. Just as she begins to panic, she is deposited in a sandy desert. The rabbit is gone. She looks around and sees only white stone ruins. Then, a voice comes to her. It is a black cat, who can apparently talk.
He gives her the usual existential dream-talk--is she really dreaming, does she understand the deep dark secrets of her own psyche, etc--and says "the master" is calling to her. "The master" has all the answers. She need just come here. Just follow the white rabbit.
And she does, as the rabbit bounds through the desert at physics-defying speed. She finds herself in a desert of glass, like a frozen sea. Through the blue-tinted, almost flawless glass, she can see the dim outline of towers, and walls, as if a whole city lay frozen beneath the surface.
A wind picks up, and the flapping of cloth can be heard. Before her floats an immense figure, wrapped in a tattered white cloak, with a face of shadow. "This is my city," he bids, "this is my Empire. Help me rebuild it, and I will tell you all you wish to know."
Behind the man is the black cat, who gives her a knowing glance. She finds herself rushing back through space-time to appear in her bedroom. While she feels much more alert and in control, she can't help but notice that her nightgown is damp, and she has sand on her feet.
